After years of veganism (now vegetarianism), seeing nutritionists, and playing around with different diets, I’ve realized that my body benefits from a high-protein diet. Unfortunately, not eating meat doesn’t really help with that, and I find it difficult to plan quick lunches and post-gym snacks to help me reach my goals. That’s where protein powder comes in handy.
Now, if you know anything about vegan protein powders, you know how chalky, clumpy, and downright gross they can be. I’ve tried a fair few brands in the last ten years, looking for something that doesn’t taste like dirt or have the texture of sand. When I heard about Good Protein and took a dip into its reviews, I thought, “Hey, let’s give this a shot." My hopes? Not so high, but I was willing to see if it could break my losing streak when it came to finding a good, tasty vegan protein powder.
Good news, it did.
In terms of texture, this protein powder is perfection. It blends like a dream, with no clumping or graininess left behind after a spin through the blender. Naturally, if you add multiple scoops or work with mix-ins, the texture will be thicker, so I prefer to stick to the suggested single scoop per drink and don’t add any additional ingredients (other than oat milk). The result is a milkshake-like drink that’s both sippable and delicious.
Packaging definitely isn’t the first thing you think about when it comes to protein powder, but I appreciate that it comes in a bag instead of a giant tub like many other options on the market do. This means it takes up less cupboard space and doesn’t fill up half my garbage bin when it’s finally empty. You can opt for 10 or 20 servings, and I favour the smaller option for when I want to try a new flavour but am not completely confident I’ll love it. For example, I recently ordered the limited edition Mini Eggs flavour, and while I liked it, I found it was just sort of just chocolate-y, and therefore was happy I didn’t have to work through a mountain of it.
There are currently 13 flavours available, including dessert-inspired options, classic berry flavours, and even an unflavoured option for days when you aren’t in the mood for anything fancy. They often introduce limited-edition seasonal flavours, like the aforementioned Mini Eggs shake. If you're curious, here’s what we’re currently working with:
Vanilla Cupcake
Vanilla Milkshake
Chocolate Fudge
Strawberries & Cream
Cookies & Cream
Peanut Butter
Salted Caramel
Bananas & Cream
Chai Latte
Mocha
Mint Chocolate Chip
Mixed Berries
Unflavoured
Now, just to warn you, these flavoured shake mixes are not subtle. I found Strawberries & Cream a bit too artificially sweet for my liking, though to be fair, I’ve never been a fan of artificial strawberry flavour, so take that with a grain of salt. I also found the Salted Caramel flavour missed the mark a little. Mint Chocolate Chip reigns supreme, at least in my opinion, and Vanilla Milkshake and Chocolate Fudge are great options for fans of classic flavours. If you like the sound of the texture, but think the flavours are a bit too dessert-y, I would suggest sticking to the unflavoured mix and blending it with your favourite smoothie add-ins, like berries and/or nut butters.
All in all, the Good Protein All-in-One Shake mixes are definitely some of the best on the market. The texture is unmatched when it comes to vegan protein powders, and it doesn’t clump or feel grainy, which is a huge win for plant-based eaters who have trouble getting in enough protein. I’ve even recommended it to friends, and they’re just as obsessed as I am.
Reviewers are big fans of the Good Protein All-in-One Shake. It’s consistently a #1 Best Seller on Amazon Canada, with an impressive rating of 4.2 stars. People love the texture, noting how effortlessly it mixes, and say it makes a great add-in for yogurt and baking. Some reviewers found the flavours too overpowering when mixed with frozen fruits, but most agree that they taste amazing and make it easier to reach their protein goals.
